Huh?

According to the Globe and Mail:

"Progressive Conservative Leader John Tory vowed yesterday to spend up to $1.3-billion to clean up Ontario coal-fired power plant"

and

"Then he would close the plants down, if possible by the same 2014 deadline that the Liberals have now targeted."

So he's going to spend $1.3 billion on the plants and then close them? wtf? I'm trying to find the words to express my mystification that someone would advocate this seriously rather than as a satire of stupid political promises, but words are failing me here.

  • I just read about this in another story the other day where they made it more clear about his motivations. He bashed the liberals for still allowing people to get sick from all the smog and said that they could pay to install scrubbers and that would alleviate the problem a bit, then bashed the liberals more for not doing so.

It's a bit silly but it looks like they're trying to take almost the same position as the liberals are but still be able to pretend they have the high ground.

  • Well the motivations were fairly clear to me, but the madness of spending $1.3 billion to install scrubbers on coal plants for a couple of years and then demolish them remains.

  • Ah, but if only politics were about sanity...

  • Hmm, even if you were to take the overly optimistic position that they just wanted to reduce emissions before decommissioning it would be a pretty expensive way to reduce emissions.

  • Perhaps Mr. Tory believes there is no more chance of shutting these plants down by 2014 than there was by 2007.
Even if there is replacement source of power in place by 2014 some or all plants might be retained as backup.
