Quick Question

You know that sound you make, when you're trying to imply that someone is a chicken, you know where you wave your elbows to emphasize how chicken the other person is?

How do you spell that?

Is is balk?

Or is it bawk?

Or something else altogether?

  • I usually spell it "bok."

It is funny that "balk" is a homonym, though.

  • I tried doing a google search but all I got was 'bok bok chicken hawk' along with 'balk balk chicken hawk' and 'bawk bawk chicken hawk'.

  • "bawk"

  • Maybe it's my northern Ontario accent coming through, but isn't it "buck-buck-buck"....

  • keving -

You got it. I raised the stupid bloody things back when, and the bobbing you describe is alternating between the only two thoughts a chicken has:

    1) Can I eat you?
    and
    2) Can you eat me?

    I'd put it: Buk ... buk ... buk ... bu-kaaaaawk?

Maybe I've thought about this too much.

  • Well, it seems like we do not have a consensus.

One thing I can say for sure though, it's *not* cluck, cluckety cluck

  • In Quebec, I believe it would be "Cri, Cri" ???

  • Ok, I just sat here bobbing my head back and forth, trying to spell the noises coming out of my mouth.
Luckily most of the other people in the office have already gone home....
